2021-22 Sky Bet Championship: Week 45 Roundup

Roundup of the latest Sky Bet Championship action as the title and automatic promotion spots were finalised.

Championship leaders, Fulham entered this round looking to wrap up the title whilst Bournemouth found themselves looking to secure the second automatic promotion spot, which would of seen them avoid a tense final day decider.

Aleksandar Mitrovic’s second-half brace fired Fulham to the 2021-22 Sky Bet Championship title as Marco Silva’s Cottagers thrashed Luton 7-0 at Craven Cottage, as Tom Cairney, Kenny Tete, Fabio Carvalho, Bobby Reid and Jean-Michel Seri also found the net.

Dominic Solanke netted a goal and assist as Bournemouth defeated Blackburn Rovers 3-0 away at Ewood Park, in which Philip Billing netted a second-half brace to end Rovers’ play-off ambitions.

Sam Surridge’s second-half hat-trick fired third-placed Nottingham Forest to a ruthless 5-1 home win over Swansea, as Alex Mighten completed the win after Cyrus Christie’s own goal had put the hosts ahead before Michael Obafemi equalised in a competitive first half.

Goals from Harry Toffolo and Faustino Anjorin fired fourth-placed Huddersfield to an eventual 2-1 win at Coventry to keep their promotion dreams alive, despite Viktor Gyokeres rescuing the Sky Blues a late consolatory goal.

Sheffield United moved above Luton into fifth on goal difference after coming from behind to defeat QPR at Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium in Friday Night Football, as Iliman Ndiaye, Jack Robinson and Conor Hourihane all found the net after Charlie Austin had headed QPR ahead initially.

Matt Crooks’ brace plus Lewis Baker’s 28th minute own goal saw Middlesbrough defeat Stoke 3-1 at home to stay seventh, albeit with a two-point gap to Sheffield Utd and Luton heading into the final day of this season.

Millwall sit a point behind Boro in eighth with an outside chance of the play-offs after Gary Rowett’s Lions beat Peterborough 3-0 at The Den, in which George Saville set up Benik Afobe’s opener before adding their third goal in the 76th minute following Jason Knight’s own goal three minutes earlier.

Elsewhere, Daniel Johnson’s brace plus Emil Riis Jakobsen’s effort saw Preston come from behind to win 3-1 at Barnsley, which condemned the Tykes to finishing rock-bottom of the Championship just one season after they had finished fifth and lost in the Play-Off semi-finals.

Andreas Weimann and Chris Martin both scored braces as Bristol City thrashed Hull 5-0 at Ashton Gate, with Antonio Semenyo also adding his name to the scoresheet.

Malcolm Ebiowei and Eiran Cashin both netted their first senior goals as Derby won 2-0 away at Blackpool to move above Peterborough into 22nd.

Will Vaulks’ 82nd minute penalty saw Cardiff snatch a 1-1 draw at home to Birmingham City after the visitors had led through Jeremie Bela’s 22nd minute strike.

Finally, Karlan Grant fired in a 78th minute winner from Callum Robinson’s counter-attack as West Brom scraped past Reading in a tight encounter at the Madejski Stadium.

Kieffer Moore curled in a 83rd minute winner from Philip Billing’s free-kick pass to fire Bournemouth to a 1-0 home victory over Nottingham Forest, which ultimately secured promotion for Scott Parker’s Cherries and condemned Forest to the Play-Offs.
