Fabian Schar has signed a new two-year contract to stay at Newcastle United until June 2024.
Schar first joined Newcastle United in July 2018 from Deportivo La Coruna after the Spanish club were relegated from La Liga, which enabled the Magpies to pay a £3m transfer fee to activate his release clause.
The Swiss defender has since established himself as a first-team regular at St James’ Park where he has scored nine goals in 98 appearances, whilst also playing full 90 minutes in 22 of 24 matches since Eddie Howe arrived as manager in November.
Speaking about his decision to stay on Tyneside for two more seasons, Schar said that he is “absolutely delighted” to sign his new contract, as he explained: “It’s what I always wanted – to stay here to play for this unbelievable club.
“Since my first day in Newcastle, I felt so comfortable; it’s like a second home and now to stay here for some more years, I’m delighted.”
Schar however had only played twice at the start of the season under Steve Bruce before the club was taken over by a Saudi-Arabian led consortium in October, with the Switzerland international describing that period as “completely different” for him and his teammates compared to now.
Howe added that he was “delighted” with how Schar has adapted to his playing style as he acknowledged the 30 year-old’s work ethic, in which he said: “He is the ultimate professional and a hugely important player in our dressing room.”
With squad changes expected across the summer as Newcastle look to fight for domestic titles, Howe also spoke of his happiness that Schar will be part of his future plans for the team as he added: “He is very driven for future success and I’m pleased he will be a part of our future.”
Schar is set to be part of Newcastle’s squad for a huge Premier League clash against Liverpool at St James Park tomorrow (30 April) in a 12:30pm kick-off.
