Charles Leclerc cruised to a comfortable victory at 2022 Australian Grand Prix to extend his championship lead.
Leclerc enjoyed a comfortable start and led from lights to flag unchallenged and also claimed the point for fastest lap, as Sergio Perez recovered from a slow start to finish second, after Max Verstappen retired with a power unit issue on Lap 39.
George Russell claimed his first podium for Mercedes and second overall in F1 as he benefitted from pitting under the second of two Safety Car periods to finish third, ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris as the three British drivers rounded out the top five.
Daniel Ricciardo finished his home race in sixth ahead of Esteban Ocon, whilst Valtteri Bottas, Pierre Gasly and Alex Albon rounded out the top ten finishers following a tense scrap in the closing stages involving several drivers.
In the driver standings, Leclerc now holds a 34 point lead ahead of Russell who climbed to second following Carlos Sainz’s retirement after an early spin, with Perez and Hamilton improving to fourth and fifth respectively.
At lights out, Leclerc fended off Verstappen who unintentionally blocked his Red Bull teammate, Perez which enabled Hamilton to leap from fifth to third, whilst Russell bettered Norris to climb to fifth.
Sainz meanwhile fell down the order on hard tyres to 14th but spun out at Turn 10 on the following lap, having got hot on the grass trying to avoid Mick Schumacher into Turn Nine which caused the Safety Car to be deployed.
Once racing resumed on Lap Seven, everyone held position as Perez hunted Hamilton down and eventually got through on the inside of Turn Three three laps later.
Up front, Leclerc built a solid lead which kept extending by one second per lap from Lap 12 as Verstappen suffered front-left graining on his mediums, which led him to pit at the end of Lap 18 with Leclerc following suit at end of Lap 22 as did Hamilton.
The Safety Car was deployed a lap later after Sebastian Vettel spun on the exit of Turn Four and grinded to a halt at Turn Five, following contact with the barriers as he slid across the track.
Racing resumed on Lap 27 as Leclerc recovered from a wide moment on the restart to fend off Verstappen,
Perez meanwhile found himself fifth on the restart ahead of Hamilton but both drivers swiftly cleared Fernando Alonso on Laps 30 and 31 respectively, with Perez soon reeling in Russell before making a pass for third at Turn Nine on Lap 36.
Verstappen meanwhile had settled into second until he suffered a sudden retirement on Lap 39 when smoke began smouldering from his Red Bull, which promoted Perez and Russell into the podium places as Leclerc proceeded to cruise to victory and fastest lap.
Further back, several cars found themselves in a mega scrap from eighth downwards led by Albon but it was Bottas, Gasly and Albon who ultimately completed the top ten.
Ferrari now lead the Constructors’ standings by 39 points from Mercedes with Red Bull a further 10 points behind in third, whilst Aston Martin are now the only team yet to score points this season.
F1 now heads to Europe for the 2022 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix which takes place from 22-24 April at Imola, with the Sprint Qualifying format returning for the first time this season.
