Everton Women Appoint Brian Sorensen As Permanent Manager

Everton have appointed Brian Sorensen as the new permanent manager of their Women’s team, with Sorensen taking charge in the summer.

Having endured a difficult season which led to the sackings of Willie Kirk and his successor, Jean-Luc Vasseur in October 2021 and February 2021, Everton Women will conclude the season under interim manager – Chris Roberts.

Sorensen will then take charge as permanent manager in the summer on a two-year contract until Summer 2024 after he departs Danish club – Fortuna Hjorring, where he has guided the club to two league titles plus 2016 Danish Women’s Cup across two stints as manager.

Sorensen’s further success include domestic cup titles with IK Skovbakken and FC Nordsjaelland in 2009 and 2020 respectively.

Speaking about his decision to join Everton and Women’s Super League (WSL), Sorensen said: “I’m extremely excited to join Everton. It is one of the historic clubs in women’s football and our backgrounds fit nicely, with common values, work ethic and ambitions.”

Sorensen also spoke of having conducted a study of the squad and believes that there will be “massive potential” with plenty of talented players from Sandy Maclver to Gabrielle George and Toni Duggan plus more capable of challenging for trophies.

The 41 year-old Danish coach also paid tribute to Fortuna Hjorring for their support in enabling him to develop his career, as he added that he is “very thankful” to have been part of the club as he now prepares to meet his new squad next week and commence preparations for next season.

Everton Women’s Managing Director, Alan McTavish led the process of appointing Sorensen as the new permanent manager and is “delighted” to secure the 41 year-old after receiving “considerable interest” from several candidates.

Explaining the eventual decision to appoint Sorensen on a two-year contract, McTavish said: “Brian was the outstanding candidate from a very strong field, and he is a proven winner.

“His vision for the team, along with his ambition and drive to move Everton Women forward, impressed us throughout the interview process.

“We look forward to Brian joining the Club in the summer and getting started on our work together ahead of the 2022/23 season.”

Everton currently sit 10th in the WSL and are next in action against Arsenal at home on Sunday 24 April 2022 in a 6:45pm kick-off.
