Burnley Sign Wout Weghorst From Wolfsburg In £12m Deal

Burnley have signed Netherlands striker Wout Weghorst from Wolfsburg in a £12m deal.

Weghorst is Burnley’s first signing of this month’s transfer window with the 29 year-old replacing Chris Wood, following the latter’s departure for Newcastle United earlier this month.

Weghorst has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract until June 2025 and will immediately begin training with his new teammates.

Weghorst’s arrival at Turf Moor also brings an end to his three-and-a-half seasons at Wolfsburg where he has scored 70 goals in 144 appearances, with the German club currently sat two points clear of the Bundesliga relegation zone.

Explaining the club’s decision to sign Weghorst, Burnley manager – Sean Dyche said: “Wout is a player that our scouts have been strong on for some time and we feel that he can add to all that we do at Burnley Football Club.

“His signing is a continued show of the Club’s and team’s development. We wish Wout well as he earns the right to push our group forwards.”

Burnley Chairman, Alan Pace added: “I’d like to wish Wout a very warm welcome to Burnley Football Club.

“We’re absolutely delighted to have brought in a great talent with a fantastic goal-scoring pedigree in Germany. I look forward to him joining up with Sean and the team.

Prior to joining Wolfsburg in June 2018, Weghorst previously played for FC Emmen, Heracles Almelo and AZ Alkmaar in Dutch Football, where he scored 90 goals in 225 appearances in total across all three Dutch clubs.

Weghorst also is part of the Netherlands National Team where he has scored twice in 12 senior appearances since 2018, with both goals coming in 2021 within the space of seven days in June.

His first international goal came in a 3-0 friendly win over Georgia as he netted the Oranje’s second goal, before finding the net to make it 2-0 in an eventual 3-2 win over Ukraine in their Group C opener of last summer’s Euro 2020.

Weghorst will wear the number nine shirt which was previously worn by Wood and could make his Clarets debut at Turf Moor on Saturday 5 February 2022, as Burnley host Watford in a rearranged Premier League clash which kicks off at 6pm GMT UK Time.
