Aston Villa have signed Calum Chambers from Arsenal for an undisclosed fee.
Chambers’ move comes after seven-and-a-half years at Arsenal where he scored five goals in 122 appearances across all competitions, after previously graduating through Southampton’s Academy and making 25 senior appearances for the Saints.
During his spell at Arsenal, Chambers also spent two seasons out on loan as he made 26 appearances for Middlesbrough during 2016-17 season, before spending the 2018-19 campaign at Fulham where he scored twice in 33 appearances.
In a short statement concerning Chambers’ exit, Arsenal said: ‘We wish Calum all the best for the next chapter in his career and thank him for his contribution to Arsenal over the past eight seasons.’
Villa confirmed that Chambers has signed a three-and-a-half year contract until summer 2025.
Chambers meanwhile spoke about his move to Villa as he described the Villains as “a massive club” who are enjoying “great moment in time” having recently begun a new era under Steven Gerrard, following Dean Smith’s sacking in November.
Explaining his decision in further depth, Chambers added: “It’s a very exciting place to be and everyone can see that from the outside. Things are happening here and it’s definitely moving in the right direction.
“For me, it was a no-brainer to join a great club. It was the right thing for me to do.”
“It’s a great club, it’s a massive club. I’ve played at Villa Park a few times and it’s great stadium with a great set of fans,” added Chambers who has made just two away appearances against Villa whilst playing for Arsenal.
The 27 year-old defender also was full of praise for Gerrard as he hailed the Liverpool legend as “a young, exciting manager”, following his impressive maiden managerial tenure at Rangers.
Chambers therefore iterated that he believes that now is a good time to make the switch for a new challenge as he commented: “It’s a great stage to be joining the club at. The club’s building momentum and it’s an exciting time to be here.
“You can really feel that being in and around the building. You can feel the energy around the place.
“I feel like I’ve joined at a great time and I can’t wait to get started and give it my all.”
