Otmar Szafnauer Departs Aston Martin

Otmar Szafnauer has departed Aston Martin after 12 years serving as Team Principal.

Szafnauer first joined F1 in 1998 as Operational Director at British American Racing before joining Honda in 2001, where he graduated through the ranks until the Japanese constructor quit F1 in 2008 with Szafnauer going on to found Soft Pauer – F1 Timing and Track Position app on iPhones.

October 2009 saw Szafnauer return to F1 with Force India and served as Team Principal until end of 2021 season, during which he was at the helm when the team went into administration during 2018 season which led to the team being rebranded as Racing Point for 2019 & 20 seasons.

2021 saw Racing Point change name to Aston Martin following Lawrence Stroll’s acquirement of a 16.7% stake in Aston Martin, with Szafnauer staying on as Team Principal and Chief Executive Officer, of which he held both positions at Force India then Racing Point.

Szafnauer though has now left the team with Aston Martin having released a short statement, stating: ‘Otmar Szafnauer has left the Company and his role at Aston Martin Cognizant Formula One™ Team will be managed within the leadership team until a replacement is appointed.’

Aston Martin also placed on record their thanks to Szafnauer for his services to the constructor, in which they commented: ‘We would like to thank him for the service provided to the team over the past 12 years and wish him well for the future as he will undoubtedly take on new challenges.’

The team also explained their leadership situation whilst a replacement Team Principal and CEO is appointed, in which they confirmed that a ‘strong group of individuals’ within the team will take interim charge whilst the Board ‘explore options before announcing a new team structure.’

With pre-season just weeks away, Aston Martin also clarified that the team’s focus remains unchanged and will be ‘currently on preparing the most competitive car possible for the start of the 2022 season.’

During Szafnauer’s reign as Team Principal of the team across its various names, Sergio Perez took their only victory during 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix whilst there has been nine further podiums and two pole positions.
