Chelsea have announced that Thiago Silva has extended his contract until end of 2022-23 season.
Silva arrived at Stamford Bridge in August 2020 from PSG on a free transfer and has gone on to score four goals in 56 appearances for the Blues, during which they won last season’s Champions League title in May plus the 2021 UEFA Super Cup in August.
Speaking about his decision to extend his contract for a further season, Silva said: “To play here with Chelsea is a real pleasure. I never thought I would play for three years here in this great club so I’m very happy to stay for another season.”
Silva has also vowed to continue fighting for victories and trophies at Chelsea as he added: “I will continue to give everything for this club and for the supporters, who have always been by my side since I arrived.
“It’s amazing to have this relationship with the fans and not only that but the players, staff and the whole club. I’m going to give everything to keep playing at this level in the most important league in the world.”
Chelsea Director, Marina Granovskaia meanwhile applauded the 37 year-old for his qualities and importance to the team, as she added: “Thiago Silva’s experience, leadership and performances have been and remain very important to this squad, so we are hugely pleased to extend his contract by another year.”
Granovskaia also spoke of the club’s excitement to retain Silva for another season as she commented: “We look forward to his continued influence as we seek honours this season and next, and more of the qualities that have led to him having such a big impact for us on and off the pitch.”
Chelsea are next in action on Wednesday 5 January (7:45pm GMT) as they host Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of their Carabao Cup Semi-Final at Stamford Bridge.
