McLaren F1 junior member, Ugo Ugochukwu has been announced as part of Carlin’s driver line-up for 2022 British F4 season.
Ugochukwu joined McLaren’s junior programme in March 2021 on a long-term contract after enjoying various successes in karting, having taken up the sport at just six years-old, with the now teenager set to follow in the footsteps of Sir Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris plus others.
Speaking about his step up to British F4 which has produced one international champion in seven seasons, Ugochukwu said: “I’m really excited to move up to British F4 next season and follow in the footsteps of many talented drivers,” with Norris and Luke Browning amongst former champions.
The 14 year-old also spoke of his ease within Carlin and pre-season plans as he added: “I feel very comfortable with Carlin and our pre-season preparations are already going well.
“There will be a lot to learnt but I have a great team around me to help deal with all the challenges. I can’t wait to get going.”
Team Principal, Trevor Carlin added that Ugochukwu will be “an exciting new talent” to watch in 2022 and is “delighted” to welcome him to Carlin for his first single-seater season, having produced four champions in the category and enjoyed higher-category success too.
Carlin also offered an insight into Ugochukwu’s progress as he commented: “Despite his very young age, Ugo is doing a great job in winter testing.
“He’s quietly taking it all in and making big improvements with every session; the sign of a driver full of potential.
Next season will see British F4 incorporate the new next-generation F4 Tatuus T-421 car which Carlin believes will make the series “even more relevant” to higher categories on the single-seater ladder.
On what Ugochukwu and fans alike can expect from the new car in 2022, Carlin added: “The new car will be a real leveller for all teams and drivers but having produced four Driver Champions and numerous Team titles, we’re determined to start this new era of F4 as strongly as possible.”
McLaren meanwhile issued a tweet congratulating Ugochukwu on securing his first single-seater drive.
Congratulations, @UgoUgochukwu2. Welcome to @BritishF4! We’re excited for your single-seater journey! 👏 https://t.co/X7i3a7UIaO
