2021-22 Premier League: Week 18 – Newcastle United vs Manchester City

Newcastle United welcome Manchester City to St James’ Park in a top vs bottom Premier League showdown.

Victory would see Newcastle climb to 18th, whereas a win would see Man City spend Xmas sat on the top of the Premier League table.

Allan Saint-Maximin is a doubt for Newcastle after suffering a muscle injury in Thursday’s loss at Liverpool.

Federico Fernandez (thigh), Jamal Lewis (hamstring) and Paul Dummett (calf) are ruled out.

Man City could be without Bernardo Silva after the Portuguese midfielder was substituted with a knock at half-time in Tuesday’s win over Leeds.

Joao Cancelo (suspension) and Kyle Walker (illness) are set to return but Ferran Torres (foot), Liam Delap (ankle) and Benjamin Mendy (personal) are still ruled out.

Stat Attack

  • Newcastle have won just one of their last five league meetings against Manchester City (W1, D1, L3).
  • Man City have lost just one of their last five Premier League visits to St James’ Park (W2, D2, L1).
  • Newcastle have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 15 home matches against City in all competitions (W1, D3, L11).
  • Callum Wilson has scored in each of Newcastle’s last two home matches.
  • City’s Bernardo Silva has scored four goals in their last three away Premier League games.

Despite Anfield being their hoodoo away ground, Newcastle actually can be proud of their performance at Liverpool on Thursday evening because they played with strong counterattacking and spirit, yet were simply outplayed in the end with scrappy defending proving their downfall.

Man City meanwhile were absolutely rampant against Leeds with very little test applied to their team despite lacking patience in attack at times, which should have them fired up here with confidence but they cannot afford to overplay here and undo their strong pre-Xmas momentum.

In fact, I have a feeling that this could well be one-sided given the contrast in form and quality between both teams, whilst City’s extra 48 hour rest will likely be of benefit if they get on the front foot and score early.

Prediction: Newcastle United 0-3 Manchester City

Result: Newcastle United 0-4 Manchester City
