2021-22 Premier League: Week 17 – Crystal Palace vs Southampton

Crystal Palace welcome Southampton to Selhurst Park in a mid-table Premier League clash.

Victory could see Palace climb to eighth if Wolves and Brighton draw elsewhere, whereas Southampton could realistically improve to 14th with a win.

Joachim Andersen could feature for Crystal Palace if he declared match fit following a recent hamstring injury.

James McArthur (hamstring) won’t be risked unless he is declared match fit but Nathan Ferguson (fitness) remains absent.

Southampton will welcome Mohamed Salisu and Oriol Romeu back after the pair served suspensions in Saturday’s defeat at Arsenal.

Valentino Livramento (muscle), Adam Armstrong (calf) and Armando Broja (thigh) is a doubt but Fraser Forster (knock), Alex McCarthy (thigh), Stuart Armstrong (calf) and Che Adams (hamstring) are ruled out.

Stat Attack

  • Crystal Palace have won just one of their last five meetings against Southampton (W1, D2, L2).
  • Southampton have won three of their last four visits to Selhurst Park (W3, L1).
  • Palace have missed their only previous penalty against Southampton in 24 Premier League meetings.
  • No Palace player has made more interceptions this season than Tyrick Mitchell, who made 23 interceptions in 16 league appearances.
  • Southampton are yet to concede from the penalty spot this season.

After a shaky few weeks, Palace certainly looked back to their best on Sunday in their win over Everton because they dominated on the front foot throughout in movement, complete with clinical finishing despite a brief loss of defensive focus during the second half.

Southampton meanwhile were simply outclassed despite enjoying a bright start at Arsenal because their finishing and defending were poor, despite excellent midfield play and shot creations so they will be eager for a response here.

Tactics therefore could well be key because both teams are capable of playing an excellent press but Palace do seem to have more creativity and energy in their play, which could well prove the difference here between two strong teams.

Prediction: Crystal Palace 2-1 Southampton

Result: Crystal Palace 2-2 Southampton
