Olli Caldwell has signed a two-round deal to race for Campos in the 2021 Saudi Arabian and Abu Dhabi rounds of the Formula Two season.
Caldwell spent 2020 and 2021 seasons racing in F3 for Trident and PREMA respectively with 16th and eighth placed championship finishes, but will now step up to F2 as replacement for David Beckmann in the number 20 Campos car as he aims to prepare for a proper F2 season in 2022.
Explaining his decision to graduate to F2 with Campos for the final two rounds of this season in Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi, Caldwell said: I’m excited to join Campos Racing for the last two rounds, they’ve made good progression throughout the year so I’m really looking forward to working with them.
“I want to thank the team for the opportunity, I can’t wait to see what the car can do and gain experience ahead of my goal of a full season in Formula 2 next year.”
Campos Sporting Director, Adrian Campos added that the team has monitored Caldwell’s progress in F3, adding: “Olli is a driver who always awakened our interest and very recently he has played a key role in the FIA Formula 3 in which he performed excellently. Our goal is to help him to rapidly adapt to the Formula 2 car.”
Caldwell will partner Ralph Boschung who yesterday announced a new one-year deal to race for the Spanish team in F2 again next season, with Campos feeling “confident” that Boschung and Caldwell “will be able to deliver strong performances and achieve top results during the last two rounds.”
Caldwell’s racing manager at Infinity Sports Management, Harry Soden also spoke about Caldwell’s “great opportunity” to impress ahead of a potential full-time move into F2 in 2022, insisting that the 19 year-old “will put in the same hard work and determination” to maximise this opportunity.
Caldwell’s debut in Saudi Arabia will take place from 3-5 December with the concluding round in Abu Dhabi taking place a week later from 10-12 December.
