Gareth Southgate has recalled six England players to his squad for this month’s crunch 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Albania and San Marino.
Chelsea’s Reece James has been recalled following three goals in his last two club matches after recovering from an ankle injury, which forced him to pull out of last month’s games against Andorra and Hungary.
AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori and Atletico Madrid’s Kieran Trippier meanwhile have been snubbed as Harry Maguire and Trent Alexander-Arnold both return to the squad.
Kalvin Phillips returns in midfield after a calf injury forced him to withdraw from the initial squad selection but Jesse Lingard drops out as a consequence, with Jude Bellingham returning in Lingard’s place.
Up front, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Patrick Bamford remain absent after failing to recover from injuries, which saw them left out of last month’s squad.
Jadon Sancho and Ollie Watkins have both been dropped from the forward selection whilst Southgate snubbed Mason Greenwood and Emile Smith Rowe, as Marcus Rashford returns after making his return last month for Manchester United following a shoulder injury.
Southgate also named an unchanged goalkeeper selection as Jordan Pickford, Sam Johnstone and Aaron Ramsdale retain their places in the squad.
England can seal automatic qualification with victory over Albania at Wembley Stadium on Friday 12 November if Poland fail to win away at Andorra, otherwise at least one point from their final match against San Marino in Serravalle on Monday 15 November would be enough to top Group I.
