Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel has revealed that he is happy with a “good” point after finishing tenth at 2021 US Grand Prix.
Vettel started 18th after taking a fourth power unit this weekend but was able to execute a two-stop strategy, which saw him run on two sets of used mediums before finishing on the hard tyres as he snatched tenth at the checkered flag after Kimi Raikkonen had a spin in the closing laps.
Reflecting on his race performance, Vettel said: “It was a good recovery after the grid penalty yesterday and when we were in clean air the pace was good.”
Vettel though noted that he found the race “difficult” in terms of managing his tyres in the hot track temperatures, so found himself “happy” when those in front of him made early stops whilst he ran longer on his first stint to the end of Lap 17 then again on another used medium tyre until end of lap 38.
Explaining why that strategy benefitted him at the end, Vettel added: ” It gave us fresher tyres at the end, when it mattered, so we could move up into the top 10. It was a good strategy by the team.”
Vettel however added that he believed that he could of caught AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda for ninth place but acknowledged that “from where we started, I think scoring a point is a good result.”
Lance Stroll meanwhile endured a disastrous race after suffering a shock Q1 elimination following yellow flags on Saturday, as he found himself spun at Turn One by fellow Canadian – Nicholas Latifi but recovered to finish 12th overall.
“It was not our weekend.” summed up by Stroll as he bemused a disappointing race in which the contact saw him drop to the rear of the field with “significant amount of damage on the front wing.”
Stroll though has taken heart from his fightback to finish 12th in the order, adding: “It cost us some performance, but we still managed to fight our way up the field. However, points were just out of reach in the end.”
