Mercedes Team Principal, Toto Wolff has announced that his team and Lewis Hamilton are “ready to react” to whatever twists are thrown their way in a titanic title fight against Red Bull and Max Verstappen during the remainder of 2021 F1 season.

Mercedes head into this weekend’s US Grand Prix with a 36 point lead in the constructors’ standings over Red Bull, although Hamilton currently sits six points behind Verstappen in the drivers’ standings with six rounds left of this season.

Wolff spoke in Mercedes’ pre-race weekend preview about Hamilton’s fight back from 11th on the grid to fifth in Turkey last time out after taking a fourth Internal Combustion Engine, which forced the Brit to suffer a ten place grid penalty despite claiming pole position in Qualifying.

Wolff though isn’t bothered about the fact that Hamilton failed to recover as many points as Verstappen did when he took his power unit penalty in Russia, saying: “For Lewis, the absolute view of Turkey is that he lost one point more than Max did in the previous race in Russia with a similar engine change, which we can live with.

“The relative view when you’re in the heat of a race is to always want another position, to score more points – that’s who we are as racers and we wouldn’t want that competitive intensity any other way.”

Wolff though revealed that he is wary of more unexpected surprises to come but is confident that Mercedes can handle any curveballs, adding: “This season has had so many twists and turns, so we’re ready to react to whatever comes our way this weekend in Texas.”

Turkey meanwhile saw Valtteri Bottas end a year-long drought for a race victory with Wolff praising his outgoing driver as Bottas prepares to move to Alfa Romeo in 2022, saying: “Istanbul was a dominant performance from Valtteri in tricky conditions, taking his first win of the season.

A faultless drive from him and he was in control of the race from the very beginning.”

“It’s a brilliant boost for him and the team heading into the final part of the season and helping us to extend our lead in the Constructors’ standings.”
