Sarina Wiegman Recalls Nine Players For England Lionesses’ Opening 2023 World Cup Qualifiers

Sarina Wiegman has recalled nine players for England Lionesses’ opening World Cup Qualifiers later this month.

Three of Wiegman’s recalls come in attack as Bethany England, Beth Mead and Ebony Salmon all feature in the squad, having been snubbed by former interim manager, Hege Riise for a training camp this summer due to the Norwegian’s focus on Team GB’s Olympics preparations with selected players.

Team GB’s Olympics dreams however came to a shock end as they suffered a dramatic Quarter-Final exit to Australia in a seven goal thriller in Tokyo, Japan.

Wiegman also coincidentally saw her former team – Netherlands crash out at the same stage after losing on penalties to USA, as the Dutch manager only stayed on as their manager for that tournament ahead of taking up her position as England Lionesses manager earlier this month.

Other recalls includes Mary Earps who replaces Ellie Roebuck in goalkeeping selection due to injury, whilst Karen Bardsley and Hannah Hampton are snubbed as Sandy Mclver and Carly Telford retain their spots in the squad.

Wiegman will be without right-back, Lucy Bronze due to knee surgery in pre-season, which has enabled Manchester City’s Alex Greenwood to receive a recall alongside Esme Morgan.

Chelsea’s Jess Carter has also been named in the squad after failing to feature in the team since making her debut in a 5-0 win against Kazakhstan in November 2017, as Lucy Staniforth also returns after finding herself snubbed in recent selections.

Man Utd’s Katie Zelem meanwhile has been handed her first official senior call-up despite initially being named in a 30-player squad for a training camp last September, only to withdraw after a positive Coronavirus test.

Zelem and Morgan are the only two players in the squad who haven’t made their official senior debuts outside of training camps and in-house friendlies.

Wiegman has also made tactical changes to her squad as Niamh Charles drops into defence with Leah Williamson promoted into midfield, as Keira Walsh misses out through injury.

ITV will televise Lionesses’ qualifiers against North Macedonia and Luxembourg on 17 and 21 September 2021 respectively, with both matches set to air on ITV4.

Here is England Lionesses’ 25-women squad in full.
