Cristiano Ronaldo has re-joined Manchester United from Juventus in a £19.7m deal on a two-year contract until June 2023.
Ronaldo’s move sees him return to Old Trafford 12 years after leaving the Red Devils for Real Madrid in a then world-record transfer deal for £80m, having netted 118 goals in 292 appearances across all competition in his first stint at Man Utd across six seasons after joining in Summer 2003.
Ronaldo has gone on to score 551 further goals across his time at Real Madrid and Juventus as well as win 20 club trophies in total, alongside Euro 2016 and 2018-19 UEFA Nations League titles for Portugal.
As part of Utd’s deal with Juventus to re-sign Ronaldo, the English club will pay £12.87m up front for the Portuguese striker and £6.86m in add-ons.
Speaking on his decision to return to Utd, Ronaldo said: “Manchester United is a club that has always had a special place in my heart, and I have been overwhelmed by all the messages I have received since the announcement on Friday.
“I cannot wait to play at Old Trafford in front of a full stadium and see all the fans again. I’m looking forward to joining up with the team after the international games, and I hope we have a very successful season ahead.”
Ronaldo’s contract will see him play until June 2023 with an option to extend for a further season.
Ronaldo’s former Utd teammate – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who is now Utd manager commented that he has “run out of words to describe Cristiano.”
Paying his compliments to the Portuguese legend, Gunnar Solskjaer described Ronaldo as “not only a marvellous player, but also a great human being.”
Gunnar Solskjaer went on to praise Ronaldo for his qualities and cannot wait to welcome him back to Old Trafford, adding: “To have the desire and the ability to play at the top level for such a long period requires a very special person.
“I have no doubt that he will continue to impress us all and his experience will be so vital for the younger players in the squad. Ronaldo’s return demonstrates the unique appeal of this club and I am absolutely delighted he is coming home to where it all started.”
Ronaldo’s first match back in a Man Utd shirt is set to take place on Saturday 11 September 2021, as the Red Devils host Newcastle United at Old Trafford in an untelevised clash at 3pm BST.
