Chelsea have signed Spanish midfielder, Saul Niguez on a season-long loan deal from Atletico Madrid with option to buy at end of 2021-22 season.
Saul’s arrival marks the first time since enjoying a loan spell at Rayo Vallecano in 2013-14 season that the 26 year-old won’t play for Atletico Madrid, as he joins on a season-long loan with Chelsea having an option to buy at end of this campaign.
Speaking on his move to Stamford Bridge, Saul said: “I am very excited to start this new challenge with Chelsea. Blues fans, I am one of you now and I can’t wait to wear the shirt, start training and see all of you.”
Chelsea Director, Marina Granovskaia added that he was delighted to welcome Saul to West-London and believes that the Spaniard “completes our squad as we compete for honours in five different competitions this season.”
Saul arrives at Chelsea as “a proven winner” with six titles across five different competitions with Atletico Madrid, which Granovskaia hopes will mean that his “huge experience” will benefit the club and make him “very well-suited to the challenges that face us on all fronts in the coming year.”
This move also marks the first time that Saul won’t be playing Spanish football in his career after having first played for Real Madrid’s Academy, prior to making a switch to city rivals – Atletico in 2008 where he went on to score 53 goals in 447 appearances across all competitions in ten seasons.
Saul however spent 2014-14 season on loan at Rayo Vallecano where he netted twice in 37 appearances, and has made 19 international appearances for Spain between 2016-19 in which he scored just three goals.
Atletico released a short statement in regards to Saul’s move, saying: ‘Saúl has always been a great professional during his time at Atlético de Madrid. We wish him the best of luck as he faces this new challenge in his career. Thank you, Saúl!’
Saul could make his Chelsea debut after the international break as Thomas Tuchel’s Blues welcome Aston Villa to Stamford Bridge live on Sky Sports on Saturday 11 September 2021, in a 5:30pm BST kick-off.
