Everton have signed Demarai Gray from Bayer Leverkusen for an undisclosed fee on a three-year contract until June 2024.
This move sees Gray seal a return to the Premier League just seven months after departing Leicester for the Bundesliga, having scored 13 goals in 169 appearances for the Foxes in all competitions across five seasons before netting just once in 12 appearances for Leverkusen this year.
Speaking on his decision to return to England and link up with Everton in an interview with evertontv., Gray said: “I’m delighted to be back in the Premier League at such a big club and I’m excited to play with the team and get to work” as the club spend pre-season in Florida, USA.
The 25 year-old winger also spoke his belief that he can continue his development and praised the appointment of Rafa Benitez as manager, commenting: ““The manager, with his ambition and what he has won in the past, is important and we’ll look to push forward and compete with the top clubs.”
Gray spoke with Benitez and Everton Director of Football, Marcel Brands before signing his contract and believes that “everything fits” in terms of ambitions and goals not just for this season but across the next few years.
Having been part of Leicester’s title winning squad of 2015-16 season at just 19 years of age after joining mid-campaign from Birmingham City, Gray believes that he is now ready to push on “… at a period in my career now where I can put everything together and achieve the targets I have set for myself.”
On what fans can expect from him, Gray teased: “I’m a speedy, tricky winger who enjoys running with the ball. I like to play anywhere along the front three and I feel like I can be dangerous in all areas. And with the ability I know I have and the belief in myself, I can help this team.”
Everton have confirmed that Gray will wear the no.11 shirt throughout 2021-22 season and he could make his competitive home debut against Southampton on Saturday 14 August at Goodison Park in an untelevised 3pm clash.
