Social Media Reaction to England’s Historic Euro 2020 Semi-Final Victory

Roundup of social media reaction across the sporting world to England’s historic semi-final victory over Denmark at Euro 2020, as the Three Lions reached their first major final since 1966.

Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions came from behind through a Simon Kjaer own goal and rebound strike from Harry Kane to defeat Denmark 2-1, after Mikkel Damsgaard had fired the Danes in front with a stunning free-kick.

The result sparked wild celebrations across the sporting world on social media as the players all took to Twitter to celebrate their historical achievement after 55 years of heartache, with Kane leading the way as he applauded the rowdy crowd at Wembley for a thunderous atmosphere.

Leeds midfielder, Kalvin Phillips meanwhile not only described his teammates as ‘immense’ but also paid tribute to his grandma, Val who had passed away earlier this year due to Coronavirus.

Even those named amongst the substitutes yet didn’t make an appearance yesterday evening (7 July) joined in with the celebrations on Twitter, as Marcus Rashford graciously paid tribute to Denmark for their efforts this tournament following Christian Eriksen’s cardiac arrest in their opening loss against Finland.

England’s achievement also drew high praise from England stars past and present, with 1966 hero – Sir Geoff Hurst amongst those to pay tribute, whilst England Lionesses who were heading for Tokyo ahead of the Olympics also sent their support on Twitter.

BBC’s Match of the Day presenter and 48 time England goalscorer, Gary Lineker meanwhile praised the team for their performance and particularly Sterling as well as applauding Denmark for their efforts throughout the past month.

Away from the footballing world, the world of motorsport was gripped by the action at Wembley with many stars across Formula One, Formula Three, BTCC plus more sharing their reactions, as Williams F1’s George Russell looked elated with the result and summed up the nation’s mood.

BTCC driver, Jake Hill isn’t even a football fan yet couldn’t resist getting swept up in the moment.

F3 driver for Prema – Olli Caldwell meanwhile clearly fancied his chances as a future weather reporter mixed in with optimism about the final.

BTCC’s Jack Goff ultimately summed up the importance of fans at sporting events in boosting the atmosphere during moments like last night.

Outside of the motorsport world savouring the drama at Wembley, stars from across tennis, cricket, athletics and Golf also got involved with their own Twitter celebrations.

Golfer, Luke Donald also posed the question of whether his fellow golfing buddies, Tommy Fleetwood and Italy’s Francesco Molinari will be talking after Sunday’s final between England and Italy, with Molinari tweeting that he will be keen to continue talking beyond Sunday anyway.
