Formula One have announced that the 2021 Turkish Grand Prix has been rescheduled for 1-3 October in place of Singapore GP.
Turkey was initially set to replace the Canadian GP across 11-13 June after the Montreal-based race was cancelled due to the on-going Coronavirus pandemic, only for Turkish Government to impose a lockdown which forced the race to be postponed.
Singapore GP organisers earlier this month then announced that their race on the streets of Marina Bay from 1-3 October was cancelled, opening up a free slot which has enabled the Turkish GP to be successfully rescheduled for that weekend in-between Russia and Japan as part of a triple-header.
In a statement, F1 confirmed their confidence in running this race under their ‘strict safety protocols’ which has enabled them to already hold seven races this season with just 27 positive cases out of over 44,000 tests.
F1 also confirmed that ‘a significant proportion’ of those working within the sport have had their vaccinations, as well as express full confidence that all members of the F1 paddock will of had both vaccinations by late summer.
F1 President and CEO, Stefano Domenicali was “delighted” with the decision to reschedule the Turkish GP and cannot wait for the sport to return to Istanbul Park, which last season hosted the moment where Lewis Hamilton clinched his historic record-equalling seventh title.
Domenicali also paid tribute to the Intercity Istanbul Park management and Mr. Vural Ak for their joint efforts in getting the race rescheduled, as F1 continues to adapt their calendar in an evolving fluid situation with doubts remaining surrounding races in Mexico, Brazil and Australia later this season
Turkey is the third race from 2020 to make an impromptu return in 2021 after Imola and Portimao made their returns at the start of this season in April, leaving Mugello and Nurburgring as the two remaining circuits to not return to the calendar this season out of those that only hosted one race.
