Portugal meet Germany at the Allianz Arena, Munich, in a crunch Group F clash at Euro 2020.
Victory could see Portugal seal a top two finish if Hungary fail to beat France in the early kick-off, whereas Germany need a win to keep their top two qualification hopes alive otherwise they face a final group match showdown against Hungary on Wednesday 23 June.
Team News
Portugal have no fresh injury concerns after Tuesday’s win against Hungary with Fernando Santos set to name an unchanged lineup.
Germany also have no fresh injury concerns although Jonas Hofmann is still unlikely to feature due to a knee injury.
Stat Attack
- Portugal have won just one of four previous meetings against Germany at the Euros (W1, D1, L2), with their third clash in this competition coincidentally falling on same date in 2008 with Germany winning 3-2.
- Germany lost their only previous Euro clash against Portugal in which Joachim’s Low Die Mannschaft were the away team, losing 3-0 in June 2000 in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
- Only one of Cristiano Ronaldo’s four goals for Portugal in 2021 has come from the penalty spot.
- Mats Hummels’ own goal against France marked the first own goal scored by a German player in 19 matches since Joanthan Tah netted into his own net in a 4-2 loss to Netherlands in September 2019.
- Only one of Germany’s 11 goals against Portugal have been scored by a defender – Hummels in a 4-0 win at 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Prediction
Portugal will be relieved to have got a late but ruthless win in Hungary on Tuesday but they must raise their game because Germany will provide tougher competition, plus have the quality to punish any wasted chances by the Portuguese players.
Germany however were purely unlucky to not snatch a draw but they simply lacked the tactical ability to catch France out because once the French settled in a deep sitting position, Joachim Low’s men just lacked the tactical quality to force the French into playing a more attacking game higher up the pitch.
This game therefore feels like one that could well boil down to who takes their chances best which at the minute looks like Portugal, although I am going for a score draw.
Prediction: Portugal 1-1 Germany
Result: Portugal 2-4 Germany
