Thomas Tuchel has signed a contract extension to stay in charge of Chelsea until June 2024 just six months after joining the club.
Since replacing Frank Lampard in late January, Tuchel have guided Chelsea to the FA Cup and Champions League Finals, of which he lost the former to Leicester before defeating Manchester City in the latter Final with both matches settled by 1-0 results.
Tuchel also guided Chelsea to a fourth-placed Premier League finish after a tense final day in which they suffered a shock loss at Aston Villa, only qualifying by virtue of London rivals – Tottenham defeating Leicester to deny the Foxes Champions League qualification.
Speaking on his decision to extend his stay at Stamford Bridge, Tuchel said: “I cannot imagine a better occasion for a contract renewal. I am grateful for the experience and very happy to stay part of the Chelsea family.
‘There is far more to come and we are looking forward to our next steps with ambition and much anticipation.”
Under Tuchel’s management, Chelsea have lost just five of their last 30 matches in charge of which three of those defeats came by 1-0 results with two of those results taking place in cup competitions.
Chelsea Director, Marina Granovskaia praised Tuchel for transitioning ‘seamlessly’ into English Football just a month after his dismissal as PSG manager in December, having finished Champions League runners-up with the French team last season.
Granovskaia also hailed Tuchel as ‘an integral part’ of Chelsea and reflecting on the improved results under the German manager, commented: “Returning us to the top four in the Premier League was crucial, and we could not be happier with our success in the Champions League which crowned a remarkable season at Chelsea.”
It has also been iterated that the aim is to produce ‘more achievements’ in the next three season under Tuchel’s management, with the German managing to successfully guide the club through the fallout of the brief European Super League plans before those plans were eventually withdrawn.
