HWA Racelab have announced that Jack Aitken will replace Matteo Nannini for the next two Formula Two rounds in Monaco and Azerbaijan.
Aitken’s appointment comes after Nannini decided to step down from his dual F2 and F3 campaigns to focus fully on mounting a title challenge in the latter series.
Speaking on his unexpected call-up having looked to have left F2 after a disappointing 2020 season, Aitken said; “I was surprised but also very honoured that HWA asked me to support the team in Monaco and Baku.”
Aitken went on to hail this opportunity as ‘a real pleasure’ to race at his two ‘favourite’ circuits, especially in Baku, Azerbaijan, where he won the 2019 Feature Race after previously finishing runner-up in that same race a year earlier in 2018.
Looking ahead to the next two rounds as he makes his F2 return, Aitken admitted that he can’t wait to get behind the wheel again with the Brit aiming “… to get the absolute maximum out of the two weekends.”
HWA Racelab Team Principal, Thomas Strick is “delighted” to have signed Aitken who is currently Williams’ Reserve Driver and hopes that he can help the team make a step forward.
Strick went on to explain Nannini’s decision to stand down from his F2 duties, adding; He has already shown his potential in that series at the start of the season. We now want to develop that potential and offer Matteo the best possible support on the rest of his career path.”
Nannini’s development will involve pushing for “regular successes” which Strick feels is the “right step” in order “… to sustainably develop and support him in the current phrase of his promising career.”
Aitken will driver car no.22 and partner Alessio Deledda this weekend (20-22 May) in Monaco, before continuing in the car for Baku which takes place from 4-6 June 2021.
