2020-21 Premier League: Week 37 – Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa

Tottenham Hotspur welcome Aston Villa to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in midweek Premier League action.

Victory would see Tottenham stay sixth and in control of the final Europa League qualification spot., whereas Villa look to keep their fading hopes of a top ten finish alive with a win.

Serge Aurier is a doubt for Tottenham after picking up a groin injury over the weekend, which kept him sidelined in Sunday’s win over Wolves.

Ben Davies remains absent with a calf injury.

Villa will welcome Tyrone Mings back into contention after recovering from a knock to his knee, which kept him out of Sunday’s loss at Crystal Palace.

Morgan Sanson (knee) could also return but Matty Cash (hamstring) and Trezeguet (knee) remains absent.

Stat Attack

  • Tottenham have won each of their last five league meetings against Aston Villa (W5).
  • Villa have claimed just four points from their last eight league trips to Spurs (W1, D1, L6).
  • Five of Tottenham’s last eight goals against Villa have come from combination of Harry Kane (3) and Son Heung-min (2).
  • Spurs’ Harry Kane (9) and Villa’s Ollie Watkins (7) combined hit 16 shots onto the woodwork this season, more than any other Premier League player.
  • Coming into this matchweek, no Premier League player has made more blocks this season than the 46 blocks made by Villa’s Ezri Konsa.

Prediction

Tottenham could enter this match knowing that they can’t finish in the top four but they still need to deliver a big performance, because a win here coupled with defeat for Everton would guarantee them at least Europa Conference League football next season.

A huge positive for Spurs though is how they responded to their away loss at Leeds with an excellent attacking performance in Sunday’s win over Wolves, in which they were dominant throughout apart from occasional lapses in defensive focus.

Villa meanwhile were fantastic on the attack at Crystal Palace in energy and creativity but a mixture of wasted second half chances and poor defending cost them, but I feel like they can take the game to Tottenham here if can tighten up their defence.

On that note, I am expecting to see a tough contest unless Villa put in another lacklustre display like they did in this fixture at Villa Park in late March, but I am going to predict a draw if both teams bring their best quality to this game.

Prediction: Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Aston Villa

Result: Tottenham Hotspur 1-2 Aston Villa
