2020-21 Premier League: Week 36 – West Brom v Liverpool

West Bromwich Albion welcome Liverpool to The Hawthorns in the third of this Super Sunday’s quadruple-header.

Victory will see West Brom leapfrog their fellow relegated rival – Fulham into 18th, whereas Liverpool can move to within one point of fourth-placed Chelsea with a win.

West Brom have no fresh injury concerns to report as Robert Snodgrass is ruled out for rest of season with an ongoing back injury.

Branislav Ivanovic is also sidelined as the Serbian defender remains absent with a hamstring injury.

Liverpool could welcome James Milner back from an unspecified injury which sidelined the English veteran in Thursday’s win at Manchester United.

Ben Davies and Naby Keita (both muscle) could also return but Joel Matip (ankle), Joe Gomez, Virgil Van Dijk (both knee), Jordan Henderson (adductor) and Ozan Kabak (muscle) remain ruled out.

Stat Attack

  • West Brom have drawn seven of their last 11 league meetings against Liverpool (D7, L4).
  • Liverpool have won just one of their last five league trips to The Hawthorns (W1, D4).
  • Just one of West Brom’s last four defeats in this fixture have come at The Hawthorns.
  • Hal Robson Kanu has been utilised as a substitute more times than any other West Brom player this season, coming on from the bench on 16 occasions.
  • No defender has made more assists in the Premier League this season than the 13 contributions made Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Prediction

With relegation now confirmed despite their improved attacking form, West Brom can afford to relax and just go for it because they have absolutely nothing to lose but they must improve their end product because that aspect has cost them heavily this season.

Liverpool meanwhile were simply clinical in a classic thriller at Man Utd on Thursday in which they often had to weather the Red Devils attacks, yet were just as dangerous when attacking themselves which proved the difference with their better finishing.

I however do expect Jurgen Klopp to ring the changes here which could suit West Brom given the Reds’ recent poor away form in this fixture, so I reckon that we will see a decent contest but Liverpool should scrape a vital win to keep their top four dream alive.

Prediction: WBA 1-2 Liverpool

Result: WBA 1-2 Liverpool
