Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel believes that he is ‘starting to click with his car’ after qualifying tenth for 2021 Portuguese Grand Prix.

Vettel had failed to reach Q3 for the last 15 races since the 2020 British GP prior to this weekend, although he did struggle throughout all three practice sessions but somehow was able to hook it all up in a Qualifying session where track evolution played a big role.

Reflecting on his time at Aston Martin so far and what lies ahead, Vettel was cautiously optimistic, saying; “There is still a lot of hard work ahead of us, but things are starting to click for me and become a bit more automatic, which is helping me focus more on my driving.”

Vettel also iterated that he is still learning about his AMR21 despite thriving in “tricky” conditions in which the gusty winds made his car feel light in weight, with a change in wind direction during Q3 costing him time as he finished tenth quickest.

CEO and Team Principal, Otmar Szafnauer explained Vettel’s improved Qualifying form as down to some set-up alterations made after FP3 which benefitted the four-time world champion.

Lance Stroll meanwhile endured a “difficult” Qualifying as he qualified 17th fastest as he found his Aston Martin “not very comfortable” and was unable to lean on the car in his preferred manner.

Speaking on what cost him in Q1 as he vowed analyse where he can improve, Stroll said; “The traffic at the end of Q1 also did not help and cost me some time on my second run.”

Stroll though believes that he will be “stronger” in the Grand Prix which he pointed to in having been the case in the last two races, whilst hoping that he can make numerous overtakes on a track that last year saw plenty of overtakes throughout the field.
