2020-21 Premier League: Week 33 – Leeds United vs Manchester United

Leeds United welcome Manchester United to Elland Road in a mouth-watering Super Sunday clash.

At least one point will see Leeds move above Arsenal into ninth, whereas Man Utd can reduce their deficit to Manchester City to eight points at the summit.

Having recently recovered from a lengthy hip injury, Adam Forshaw is ruled out for Leeds with a muscle injury suffered in their 1-1 draw against Liverpool last Monday.

Liam Cooper (suspension), Rodrigo (muscle) and Raphinha (knock) remain absent.

Man Utd could welcome Eric Bailly back into contention after the Ivory Coast defender spent the last few weeks in self-isolation, following a positive Coronavirus test.

Phil Jones and Anthony Martial remain absent with knee injuries.

Stat Attack

  • Leeds have won just one of their last 14 Premier League meetings against Manchester United (W1, D4, L9), with all four draws finishing 1-1.
  • Man Utd have lost just one of their last six league trips to Elland Road (W3, D2, L1).
  • Only one of Stuart Dallas’ seven league goals for Leeds this season have come from a header.
  • Six of Man Utd’s 14 penalty goals this season across all competitions have come away from Old Trafford, with Bruno Fernandes scoring five of Utd’s six away spot-kicks.
  • Craig Pawson is taking charge of a Leeds match this season for the first time.

Prediction

Leeds will be relieved to be coming into this game off the back of a huge point against Liverpool, after digging in defensively before snatching a late equaliser because I can see more of the same tactics being needed here against a strong Man Utd team.

Utd meanwhile will be hoping for a better first half display than we saw against Burnley, although they did look sharper in the second half with high tempo energy which punished the Clarets on the counter.

You therefore would probably be wise to think Leeds will deploy counter-attack tactics, which I think will pay off because Man Utd will likely have one eye on Thursday’s Europa League semi-final so won’t go full on attack as the match wears on.

Prediction: Leeds United 1-1 Manchester United

Result: Leeds United 0-0 Manchester United
