Everton’s Board of Directors have released a statement expressing how ‘saddened and disappointed’ the club is to learn of breakaway plans concerning six Premier League rivals.
Everton’s Merseyside rivals, Liverpool have joined Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham in announcing plans to break away and form an European Super League.
Releasing a fiercely vocal statement on the matter, Everton spoke of how those six clubs are ‘acting entirely’ out of their own interests and risks ‘tarnishing’ football’s reputation across both the Premier League and wider game whilst showing ‘disrespect’ for other teams.
Everton also iterated that their greed is ‘betraying the majority of football supporters’ not just across the UK but beyond, as evidenced by protests ahead of last night’s (19 April 2021) 1-1 draw between Leeds and Liverpool at Elland Road.
Noting the fact that the world is still in the grip of the Coronavirus pandemic, Everton asserted their view that this is a time to ‘be working together collaboratively’ to develop the sport and with supporters in mind instead of plotting a breakaway league.
EFL 'Opposes' European Super League Plans
Deflecting focus from the ‘Super Six’, Everton acknowledged lower league clubs like Lincoln City, Notts County and Southend across with various other teams who have worked to throughout the sport’s history to give supporters an ‘enriched’ experience.
Their statement went on to describe the six clubs as ‘disenfranchising’ football fans including their very own supporters by threatening the ‘very structure that underpins the very game’ which billions love around the world.
Everton’s Board of Directors therefore are urging all six domestic clubs part of this plot to park their ‘preposterous arrogance’ aside amidst ‘deserved’ backlash across football and outside circles like politics and non sporting media.
Bill Kenwright CBE, Farshad Moshiri and other members of Everton’s board concluded by ‘respectfully’ requesting that these proposals are ‘immediately withdrawn’, as ‘our beautiful game’ sinks to ‘its lowest ever position in terms of trust’ both internally amongst clubs and with fans too.
