Trailing from the first leg, Borussia Dortmund face a tough task as they welcome Manchester City to Signal Iduna Park in the second leg of their Quarter Final tie in 2020-21 UEFA Champions League.
Borussia Dortmund know that a 1-0 win would see them through on away goals rule, but should City score then Dortmund must win outright by three or more goals if are to advance to the semi-finals, whereas a 2-1 result would send the tie to extra time and possibly penalties.
Man City meanwhile simply need to avoid defeat in order to progress to the last four.
Team News
Jadon Sancho could return for Borussia Dortmund after recovering from a thigh injury which has kept him out for the last month.
Axel Witsel (Achilles), Marcel Schmelzer, Dan-Axel Zagadou (both knee) and Youssoufa Moukoko (shin) remain ruled out.
Man City could welcome Aymeric Laporte back from a hip injury which forced him to miss Saturday’s defeat against Leeds.
Sergio Aguero remains absent with a knock which saw him fail to feature in the first leg and was left out of Saturday’s loss.
Stat Attack
- Borussia Dortmund have avoided defeat in two of three previous meetings against Man City (W1, D1, L1).
- Man City lost their only previous away trip to Dortmund in December 2012 (L1), as Julian Schieber struck a 57th minute winner for the hosts.
- Five of Dortmund’s eight home goals in Champions League this season have come from Erling Haaland.
- All six of City’s away goals in Champions League this season have come from different goal scorers (Ferran Torres, Ilkay Gundogan, Raheem Sterling, Phil Foden, Bernardo Silva & Gabriel Jesus).
- Carlos del Cerro Grande is refereeing a Borussia Dortmund game for the first time this season, whilst this is City’s first away trip refereed by Cerro Grande after he was on duty for their home win over Olympiacos in November.
Prediction
Having snatched a crucial away goal last week, Dortmund know that a 1-0 result will be enough, yet their defence often has been their biggest Achilles heel this season so they will have to be at their very best to get a narrow win as I think we will see two goals here.
After resting several first team players last Saturday, Pep Guardiola will be hoping that his decision pays off because if City can dictate this game like they did throughout the first leg then they should fancy their chances here.
City however have a blockbuster FA Cup semi-final to come on Saturday so scoring first is going to be crucial, otherwise Dortmund will fancy their chances but their defence often has been their downfall and I can see that happening here.
Prediction: Borussia Dortmund 1-2 Manchester City
Result: Borussia Dortmund 1-2 Manchester City (Manchester City win 4-2 on aggregate!!)
