FIFA have confirmed that 10 stadiums across nine host cities will host the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup across Australia and New Zealand.
Australia will have six stadiums across five host cities with Sydney holding games at Stadium Australia and Sydney Football Stadium.
Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Peth will also host fixtures across Australia, whilst Auckland, Dunedin, Hamilton and Wellington will be host cities in New Zealand.
New Zealand will play host to the opening match on 10 July 2023 with Auckland’s Eden Park chosen as the tournament’s launch venue.
Sydney’s Stadium Australia will host the Grand Final on 20 August 2023, with both nations hosting one semi final each.
Hailing the unveiling of the nine host cities as ‘a major milestone’ for the preparation for the next Women’s World Cup, FIFA President – Gianni Infantino is keen to build on the ‘incredible success’ of the 2019 tournament in France.
Infantino also spoke of the tournament’s importance off the pitch, adding; “… will also provide a powerful platform to unite and inspire people, transform lives and create a lasting legacy for women’s football in Australia and New Zealand and around the world.”
Football Australia President, Chris Nikou has meanwhile described this development as a step closer towards creating the ‘biggest sporting event’ held Down Under since Sydney hosted the 2000 Olympics, omitting the fact that Queensland successfully hosted 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Echoing Infantino’s thoughts on impact of the tournament, Nikou spoke of the opportunity to provide a platform for growth, commenting; “… a tournament that will unite nations, inspire generations and provide our diverse and multicultural game with the perfect platform to grow over the coming years.”
New Zealand Football President, Johanna Wood meanwhile spoke of her desire to see this tournament “leave a lasting impression…” on not just football but women’s sport as a whole across the Asia-Pacific region.”
