Manchester City have announced that Sergio Aguero will leave the club at the end of 2020-21 season upon expiry of his contract.
Aguero announced his departure in a special letter posted on Twitter, beginning with; ‘When a cycle comes to an end, many sensations arise. A huge sense of satisfaction and pride remains in me for having played with Manchester City for a whole ten seasons – unusual for a professional player this day and age.’
Aguero went on to reflect on his major achievements with City and broken records like the Premier League’s all-time record foreign goalscorer with 181 goals so far, although the Argentinean has vowed to ‘continue to give it my utmost’ throughout rest of this season.
As for his future, Aguero concluded his letter by saying; ‘… a new stage with new challenges will begin, and I am fully ready to face them with the same passion and professionalism that I have always dedicated to continue competing at the highest level.”
Man City Chairman, Khaldoon Al Mubarak paid tribute by confirming that he has commissioned a statue of Aguero alongside those already in planning for his ex teammates, David Silva and Vincent Kompany.
A permanent mosaic will be designed and installed at the City Football Academy to further mark his legacy in City folklore.
Al Mubarak has also commented on Aguero’s exit, saying; “Sergio’s contribution to Manchester City over the last 10 years cannot be overstated.
“His legend will be indelibly etched into the memories of everyone who loves the Club and maybe even in those who simply love football.”
Al Mubarak also iterated that now isn’t the time ‘for farewell words and speeches’ as the club go for a historic quadruple within the next two months.
Aguero’s final home match will take place on Sunday 23 May 2021 as City host Everton at the Etihad Stadium, with thousands of fans expected to be in attendance if the UK Government’s phrased easing of restrictions are lifted enough to permit spectators at football stadiums.
