England Lionesses defender, Demi Stokes has signed a new two-year contract with Manchester City until June 2023.
Since arriving at City from South Florida Bulls in 2015, Stokes has gone on to produce over 150 club appearances in all competitions and contribute to winning six domestic trophies.
Although ‘pleased’ to have signed a new deal, Stokes admitted that she is never one to take contract renewals as a guarantee, saying: “I don’t take any contract renewal for granted, but especially right now, I’m very grateful and fortunate to have the opportunity to continue my journey here with this amazing team.
With the club having won 18 of their last 19 matches in all competitions, Stokes added that she can’t imagine herself playing elsewhere, commenting: “It’s an exciting time to be a part of Manchester City and in my mind, I didn’t want to be anywhere but here – the Club is home for me and it was an easy decision to extend my stay.”
Manager, Gareth Taylor meanwhile is ‘delighted’ to secure Stokes for two further seasons, describing the England international as ‘a very important member of the team’ and is looking forward to continue working with her for the foreseeable future.
Manchester City Women Managing Director, Gavin Makel meanwhile hailed Stokes as an ‘integral’ player to the club’s success and is ‘delighted’ to see her pen a new contract extension.
Makel also spoke of constant talk amongst club staff about wanting ‘good people’ at the club beyond playing ability, and commented that Stokes fits their expectations, saying: “We constantly talk about having good people at the Club and Demi is certainly one of those – humble, talented and determined with an infectious personality, as well as being a fantastic role model to everyone.”
