2020-21 Premier League: Week 28 – Manchester United vs West Ham

Manchester United welcome West Ham to Old Trafford in Super Sunday Night Football as both teams push for a top four finish.

Should Leicester win earlier in afternoon, Man Utd can reclaim second with victory whereas West Ham could move level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea with a win.

David De Gea is set to return for Manchester United after missing their last three matches for personal reasons.

Marcus Rashford (ankle) could also feature but Edinson Cavani (knock), Paul Pogba, Donny van de Beek (both muscle), Anthony Martial (hip), Juan Mata (unspecified) and Phil Jones (knee) remain absent.

West Ham will be without Jesse Lingard who is ineligible to face his parent club due to league rules concerning loan deals between same clubs in division.

Ryan Fredericks (groin) could return but Darren Randolph (hip), Arthur Masuaku, Andriy Yarmolenko (both knee) and Angelo Ogbonna (ankle) remain on the sidelines.

Stat Attack

  • Man Utd are unbeaten in four of their last six Premier League meetings against West Ham (W2, D2, L2).
  • West Ham are winless in their last 12 league trips to Old Trafford (D3, L9).
  • Three of Man Utd’s last four home goals against West Ham have come from midfield.
  • Hammers’ Tomas Soucek has scored four goals in five away appearances in 2021.
  • Two of Bruno Fernandes’ last three home goals at Old Trafford has come from the penalty spot.

Prediction

Man Utd will be fairly disappointed with their late draw on Thursday against AC Milan which makes me think that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could ring the changes to save some key players for this Thursday, although Utd did deliver a great pressing performance to beat Manchester City in their last league game.

West Ham meanwhile were clinical in their win over Leeds on Monday in a scrappy encounter but will have to be rock solid and well organised if they’re to get a result here, despite their poor recent record at Old Trafford and Lingard’s absence won’t help.

Their FA Cup game here last month however was tightly fought with West Ham sitting in and making life difficult for Utd even through extra time, although both teams will have to now step up with just 90 minutes and I think the hosts could edge this.

Prediction: Manchester United 1-0 West Ham

Result: Manchester United 1-0 West Ham
