Formula One has announced that the Portugese Grand Prix at Portimao will return across 30 April – 2 May 2021.
The decision to return to Portimao will see the Portuguese Grand Prix take place as the third round of this season, having initially only featured on last season’s calendar in late October as part of a revamped schedule due to the Coronavirus pandemic with over 27k fans in attendance across the race weekend.
F1 CEO, Stefano Domenicali is ‘thrilled’ to see F1 finalise a deal to head back to Portimao after last season’s race provided a historic moment as Lewis Hamilton clinched a record-breaking then 92nd race victory.
Domenicali also spoke of his gratitude to the race promoter and Portuguese Government for working hard and their dedication in greenlighting this year’s visit.
Portugal’s Secretary of State of Tourism, Rita Marques meanwhile thanked F1 and the FIA for their confidence in wanting to return to Portugal and has vowed to ensure that Portugal will give ‘full commitment’ to ensure that the race weekend is a big success.
Domenicali meanwhile reiterated that F1 is ‘confident and excited’ about this season, having successfully delivered 17 races in 2020 across 14 different circuits in front of millions of fans across TV and other devices.
On the topic of fan attendance for this year’s race weekend, F1 stated that their main priority is the safety of personnel and communities of race hosting venues with a decision on fans to be decided by local authorities in coming weeks.
Portimao isn’t the only returning race from late additions to the 2020 calendar as Imola is also set to return, just two weeks before F1 visits Portimao with the Emilia Rogma Grand Prix taking place from 16-18 April 2021.
