Mesut Ozil has departed Arsenal to sign for Turkish Super Lig club, Fenerbahce on a free transfer.
Ozil signed for Arsenal from Real Madrid in September 2013 for an undisclosed fee and has since gone on to score 44 goals in 254 appearances for the Gunners across all competitions, despite failing to start any match this season.
Speaking on his departure after enjoying support from everyone associated with the club and fans, Ozil said; “I’d like to thank the club for this amazing journey over the past seven-and-a-half years.
“The support I have felt from the team and fans during my time here has been truly incredible and something I will always be grateful for.”
Ozil in particular spoke of the fact that he helped to create memories and success with four FA Cup titles and 2015 FA Community Shield, which he hopes “will last a lifetime.”
With his switch to Fenerbahce now complete, Ozil singled out Arsenal’s Technical Director – Edu Gaspar for praise, saying; “I’d like to thank Edu Gaspar for helping bring about a professional and dignified solution in the past few days, and I wish everyone at the club the best in their attempt to continue to bring Arsenal back to the top, where we belong.”
Gaspar in turn thanked Ozil for his hard work at Arsenal and attitude throughout the transfer process, saying; “We would like to thank Mesut and his team for their professionalism during our recent negotiations.
“I know everyone associated with Arsenal will join me in wishing Mesut and his family the best of health, success and happiness in the next chapter of his career.”
Former Arsenal player turned manager, Mikel Arteta paid tribute to his ex teammate, describing their time together as “a privilege” and added that Ozil’s “creativity and vision” were behind many great moments for the club despite being snubbed for the squad in last August’s FA Cup Final due to injury.
Arteta concluded by thanking Ozil for his contribution and “wish him all the best with Fenerbahce.”
