Matt Macey Departs Arsenal for Hibernian

Matt Macey has departed Arsenal to sign for Scottish Premiership’s Hibernian Football Club on a short-term contract until end of season.

Macey joined Arsenal in October 2013 after switching from Bristol Rovers where he quickly rose through the ranks to become a first-team goalkeeper at the age of 17.

Macey has since made just two first-team appearances for the Gunners with both coming during 2017-18 season in EFL Cup and Europa League respectively but the now 26 year-old is keen for regular game time after being an unused substitute in several games since Project Restart in June, saying; “I’m grateful for every experience I had at Arsenal but I’m hungry to play first-team football.”

Arsenal released a statement in which the club thanked Macey ‘for his contribution to the club and wish him all the best’ as he joined Hibs.

Having spent recent seasons on loan in the EFL, Macey acknowledged that he faces a tough task to displace Israel’s Ofir Marciano as Hibs’ first-choice goalkeeper as he said; “I know that won’t be handed to me here, so it’s up to me to show what I can do in training and take it from there.”

Macey also revealed that he was persuaded to make the move by ex Celtic star, Kiernan Tierney, saying; “I spoke to Kieran Tierney at length about the opportunity to come to Hibs, about Scottish football and the country in general. Kieran was really positive about every aspect of it, whether it was the club or Edinburgh itself.”

Hibernian Head Coach, Jack Ross is “delighted to have signed “a goalkeeper of Matt’s calibre” and is expecting Macey to challenge both Marciano and Kevin Dabrowski for a starting spot on the team sheet for each match.

Ross meanwhile has welcomed this move as one that will benefit the club between the sticks as they battle for third in the Scottish Premiership amidst a three match losing run without scoring, saying; “It provides us with real strength in depth in the goalkeeping department as we build towards the second half of the season.”

Hibs have also reached the semi-finals of this season’s Scottish League Cup where they will play St Johnstone on Saturday 23 January 2021 (5:30pm GMT) at Hampden Park, with Livingston or St Mirren awaiting in the Final, should the Edinburgh-based club progress to the Final on Sunday 28 February 2021.
