2020-21 Sky Bet Championship: Week 23 Roundup

Norwich City begin 2021 still sat atop of the Sky Bet Championship after a packed but disrupted New Year round, which saw three matches postponed. 

Emiliano Buendia volleyed in a 62nd minute winner from Kenny McClean’s clinical cross to seal victory for Norwich over ninth placed Barnsley, keeping the Canaries top with a four point lead over second-placed Swansea.

Jamal Lowe’s brace saw the Swans fight back to defeat sixth-placed Watford for a home 2-1 win after Tom Cleverley had fired the Hornets ahead from Andre Gray’s lay-off pass.

Junior Stanislas fired in a late winner for Bournemouth from Lewis Cook’s long ball to beat Stoke City, lifting the Cherries up to third.

Brentford consequently slid to fourth after their match against Bristol City was postponed due to fears concerning a potential Coronavirus outbreak amongst the Robins squad.

Lucas Joao struck twice on his return from injury as Reading came from behind to defeat Huddersfield, after Frazier Campbell had headed the Terriers ahead from Isaac Mbenza’s cross.

Down in the relegation zone, Wycombe continue to prop up the table after Uche Ikpeazu’s opener was overturned as Middlesbrough fought back to win 3-1 at Adams’ Park.

Rotherham sit second-bottom but with three games now in hand after their clash against Cardiff was postponed just a hour before kick-off, due to a snow covered pitch rendering the game unplayable “in the interest of player safety” due to conditions.

Derby slipped back into the bottom three after Callum Paterson squeezed in a 61st minute winner for Sheffield Wednesday, lifting the Owls out of the relegation zone for the very first time this season.

Elsewhere, Lewis Grabban’s controversial 70th minute penalty proved enough for Nottingham Forest to snatch victory at Preston, despite claims that he had scored the spot-kick via both feet after slipping during his run-up.

Bradley Dack scored his first goal since November 2019 to clinch victory for Blackburn at Birmingham City, after Adam Armstrong had put the visitors ahead with a sharp counter attack finish into the bottom right corner.

Millwall made it one win in their last 13 games after Jake Cooper’s own goal and Gustavo Hamer’s strike handed Coventry victory at The Den, despite Jed Wallace’s second-half penalty before Murray Wallace was sent off in injury time.

Finally, Luton’s clash against QPR was postponed due to positive Coronavirus tests amongst the Hatters’ players and staff.
