2020-21 Sky Bet Championship: Week 16 Roundup

Norwich continue to sit atop of Sky Bet Championship as the promotion battle continues to grow tighter with four rounds left before Xmas. 

Goals in three minutes from Josh Martin and Max Aarons saw Norwich come from behind to defeat Sheffield Wednesday, who led through Josh Windass’ 60th minute header as they now slip down to the foot off the Championship.

Bournemouth sit second after Diego Rico scored a stunning free-kick as the Cherries thrashed Barnsley in a ruthless four goal display at Oakwell, with Philip Billing, Dominic Solanke and Sam Surridge also finding the net.

Lucas Joao’s penalty coupled with Michael Morrison’s header proved enough to send Reading third, as the Royals defeated ten-man Nottingham Forest who had Ryan Yates dismissed for handball just before Joao’s consequent penalty.

Conor Roberts and Andre Ayew struck for Swansea who rose up to fourth after comfortably beating ten-man Luton, as Matty Pearson was red carded following two bookable offences for the Hatters.

Stoke climbed to fifth after Nathan Collins’ 19th minute header from Morgan Fox’s cross proved enough to edge past Middlesbrough in an edgy encounter at the Riverside Stadium.

Comeback goals from Ivan Toney and Sergi Canos kept Brentford sixth after a 2-2 draw against ten-man Blackburn in which Jacob Davenport poked in a late equaliser following Darragh Lenihan’s dismissal for a foul on Toney after Joe Rothwell’s opener.

Down in the relegation zone, Jason Knight fired in from Martyn Waghorn’s blocked shot as Derby beat Millwall to move up to second-bottom after Wednesday’s loss at Carrow Road, whilst the Lions courted controversy after fans booed players taking the knee in support of Black Lives Matter.

Wycombe remain third bottom as Jason McCarthy’s 87th minute own goal gifted Preston a point in a 2-2 draw at Deepdale, after Gareth McCleary and Scott Kashket struck in the second half to nearly register a comeback win after Tom Barkhuizen’s opener for the hosts.

Elsewhere, Watford slipped to seventh after tasting defeat for the first time in seven matches as Kieffer Moore fired in from a goalmouth scramble triggered by a corner, which proved enough for Cardiff to snatch a third consecutive win.

Harlee Dean’s 80th minute header clinched Birmingham City a surprise win at eighth-placed Bristol City as the ex Brentford centre-back scored from Jeremie Bela’s corner.

Goals in seven minutes from Maxime Biamou and Tyler Walker sent Coventry on their way to a 3-1 victory over Rotherham, as Leo Ostigard added a  third before Dan Barlaser rescued the Millers a late consolatory penalty.

Finally, Josh Koroma put Huddersfield ahead with a third minute strike before teeing up Harry Toffolo for the Terriers’ second as QPR fell to a third consecutive away defeat.
