Rennes welcome Chelsea to Roazhon Park in a huge Group E clash in 2020-21 UEFA Champions League.
Rennes can potentially move off the foot of the group with victory but should they lose to Chelsea and Sevilla defeat Krasnodar, both Rennes and Krasnodar will be eliminated from the competition with two rounds left of this stage.
A win for Chelsea meanwhile would see them remain top and potentially seal qualification for the knockouts but only if Sevilla avoid defeat to Krasnodar.
Dalbert is suspended for Rennes after being sent off in their first clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge a few weeks ago.
Daniele Rugani (hamstring) and Faitout Maouassa (ankle) remain absent and are joined on the injury list by Jonas Martin (unspecified).
Chelsea could welcome Kai Havertz back after the German missed their last three matches after a positive Coronavirus test.
Thiago Silva could also be available after sitting out Saturday’s win at Newcastle following his late return from international duty for Brazil.
- This is Rennes’ first-ever home match against Chelsea in all competitions.
- Chelsea have lost three of their last five European away trips against French opposition (W1, D1, L3).
- Timo Werner has scored three goals in his last two Champions League appearances for Chelsea, with the Blues keeping clean sheets on both occasions.
With much at stake, Rennes really need a good performance if they’re to realistically stand any chance at keeping their qualification hopes alive, especially against a Chelsea team who absolutely battered them at Stamford Bridge just before the international break.
Chelsea meanwhile will be hoping that Saturday’s rusty win was simply down to a case of first match back after the international break because for all of their superb attacking, they just lacked any real clinical finishing because they really should of defeated Newcastle by more than two goals given their performance.
France however has often been the Blues’ bogey country in European competitions in terms of recent visits which should offer Rennes some hope if they can get on the front foot early and control this match, otherwise I can see a second consecutive away win for Chelsea in three days coming here.
Prediction: Rennes 0-2 Chelsea
Result: Rennes 1-2 Chelsea
