Manchester United’s Lauren James has received a debut senior call-up to the England Lionesses squad for this month’s training camp.
James replaces injured teammate, Alessio Russo in the squad after impressing for Casey Stoney’s Red Devils who currently sit top of the Women’s Super League, with manager, Phil Neville describing James as “… an exciting young player that we want to help develop further.”
Chelsea striker, Fran Kirby misses out with an ankle injury suffered during October’s training camp and has been replaced by Liverpool’s Rinsola Babajide who was omitted from last month’s selection.
Millie Bright and Abbie McManus have been snubbed in defence whilst Everton’s Izzy Christiansen misses out in midfield with Lucy Staniforth, and Jordan Nobbs receiving recalls alongside Laura Coombs, of whom is returning to the squad after a five-year absence.
Speaking on the decision to recall Coombs, Neville said; “Laura Coombs is a player I have watched a lot this season and I have been very impressed with her progression in the game. She performed consistently at a high level which merits her call-up to the squad.”
With their final friendly of 2020 against Norway at Bramall Lane cancelled due to Covid restrictions, there will instead be two in-house matches pitting the squad against each other in two teams.
Speaking on the decision to opt for an intensive training camp with two in-house friendlies, Neville said; “This has been a challenging time for everyone, but it will be good to finish the year with an intensive training camo during which the squad will develop further and in which every player has the chance to prove themselves ahead of our upcoming major tournaments.”
Players will gather at St George’s Park on Sunday 22 November ahead of what Neville has described as a “crucial” part in preparations for next summer’s Olympics and UEFA Women’s Euro in 2022.
