2020-21 UEFA Nations League: Wales vs Republic of Ireland

With promotion to UEFA Nations League A at stake, Wales face a tough test as they welcome Republic of Ireland to the Cardiff City Stadium in League B4.

Victory for Wales coupled with defeat for Finland in Bulgaria could see the Welsh outfit promoted to League A otherwise it goes to a winner takes all showdown on Wednesday, whilst Ireland know that a win could see them secure their survival if Bulgaria lose to Finland.

Wales have no fresh injury concerns after Thursday’s goalless friendly draw against USA in Swansea with a full squad available for selection.

Republic of Ireland will be without Callum Robinson and Alan Browne following positive Coronavirus tests whilst Brighton’s Aaron Connolly has withdrawn through injury.

Prediction

After a rusty performance against USA on Thursday in which the defending was devoid of any real man marking whilst chances were rushed rather than finished off with any clinical quality, they simply have to raise their game with a much sharper and wise performance here.

Ireland meanwhile were pretty poor throughout their friendly loss to England, particularly defensively but when they got possession, they did look threatening but ultimately lacked the sharpness or energy needed to create decent chances of note outside set pieces.

On that note, fans shouldn’t expect a cracker because both teams simply weren’t impressive by any stretch on Thursday but given Ireland’s poor form, I can see Wales having the edge if they can play better.

Prediction: Wales 1-0 ROI

Result: Wales 1-0 ROI
