Just days after defeating Serbia on penalties to qualify for Euro 2020, Scotland are back in UEFA Nations League action as they take on Slovakia in Trnava in UEFA Nations League B2.
Anything other than a win could see Slovakia relegated whilst Scotland know that victory would see them promoted regardless of what Czech Republic achieve against Israel, although a draw would require Czech Republic to need to better their result to take the promotion fight to the final matches.
Slovakia have no fresh injury concerns after needing extra-time to clinch qualification for Euro 2020 at Northern Ireland’s expense but Stefan Tarkovic is expected to rotate his squad.
Scotland could be missing Andrew Robertson after the Liverpool fullback suffered cramp towards the end of Thursday’s Euro 2020 Qualifying Play-Off in Serbia as manager, Steve Clarke prepares to rotate his squad.
- Slovakia have won just one of three previous meetings against Scotland in all competitions (W1, L2).
- Scotland have lost their only previous away trip to Slovakia, losing 3-0 in October 2016 in Qualifying for 2018 FIFA World Cup.
- Both of Scotland’s two goals in this fixture has come after half-time and not away from Hampden Park.
With both teams having needed extra-time on Thursday to book their spots at the delayed Euros next summer, team selection will likely play a part in how this match plays out but Scotland are on a nine match unbeaten run in all competitions, so will come into this high on confidence knowing that a win would see them promoted to League A.
It is worth noting that both teams played with high energy in those wins but Scotland were the stronger in terms of mixing their attacking play down middle and through the flanks, so if they can continue that quality here but are stronger in finishing their chances then I can see them making it three consecutive wins in this fixture.
Prediction: Slovakia 1-2 Scotland
Result: Slovakia 1-0 Scotland
