Following defeat against AC Milan in their opening Group H match of 2020-21 Europa League, Celtic face a tough task as they visit Lille at Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
Victory for Lille could keep them top of the group whilst a win for Celtic could lift them up into the two qualification spots for the knockouts.
Lille have no fresh injury concerns to report after Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Nice although manager, Christophe Galtier could ring the changes to keep his squad fresh.
Celtic could welcome Odsonne Edouard back after the strike missed their last three matches following a positive Coronavirus test whilst on international duty.
Hatem Abd Elhamed and Nir Bitton are also set to return following fitness issues but James Forrest (ankle), Christopher Julien and Vasilis Barkas (both back) remain sidelined.
- This is Lille’s first-ever meeting against Celtic in all competitions.
- Lille have never met Scottish opposition before across various European competitions.
- Celtic have won just one of nine away trips to French opposition (W1, D3, L5).
Lille had a relatively easy ride last week at Sparta Prague who were defensively poor with far too much space for the French team to score four goals, whereas Celtic were simply outplayed by AC Milan in a good attacking game between those two clubs.
This therefore should be a tougher test for Lille than they might expect because Celtic will certainly give them a match but the Hoops need to tighten up their defensive focus, particularly because it was various mistakes in that aspect which ultimately cost them a point against AC Milan who were just clinical.
A draw therefore would be a good result for Celtic but given their poor away form in France and Lille’s impressive win over Sparta last week, I feel that Lille will have the edge here.
Prediction: Lille 2-1 Celtic
Result: Lille 2-2 Celtic
