Liverpool bring the Fourth Round of 2020-21 Carabao Cup to a blockbuster conclusion as they welcome Arsenal to Anfield.
Having met on Monday in Premier League, Liverpool will be looking for a second consecutive victory over the Gunners whilst Arsenal will be looking to reach a fourth League Cup Quarter-Final in five seasons.
Thiago Alcantara is ruled out Liverpool after testing positive for Coronavirus and is currently self-isolating per guidelines.
Jordan Henderson (thigh) is unlikely to be risked in this match but Joel Matip (muscle) and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (knee) are definitely ruled out.
Arsenal could welcome Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Cedric Soares back from calf injuries if they can prove their fitness in time.
Shkodran Mustafi (hamstring), Emile Smith Rowe (shoulder), Calum Chambers and Gabriel Martinelli (both knee) remain ruled out.
- Liverpool are unbeaten in ten of 15 previous League Cup matches against Arsenal excluding penalty shootouts (W5, D5, L5).
- Arsenal have won just one of seven League Cup trips to Anfield including penalty shootouts (W1, D1, L5), with that single draw coming in November 1988 in Third Round when replays used to be in play under old rules.
- A Liverpool player has scored at least twice in three of Arsenal’s last four trips to Anfield in all competitions.
Liverpool put in a clinical performance on Monday but defensive mistakes in man marking still remain which quite worrying and highlights questions around the ability of the Reds’ defence, given that they have kept just one clean sheet in five matches this season across all competitions.
Arsenal meanwhile experienced similar issues and failed to properly take advantage of Liverpool’s mistakes bar their only goal, so can’t exactly return here as favourites because they still have work to do defensively.
Both managers however will be ringing the changes but if Jurgen Klopp’s second choice lineup with addition of extra first-team regulars produce a similar performance akin to their effort at Lincoln last week, I can’t see Arsenal doing much to stop them although this scheduling is all good practice for the Gunners ready for a fast and furious Europa League campaign from next month.
Prediction: Liverpool 2-1 Arsenal
Result: Liverpool 0-0 Arsenal (Arsenal win 5-4 on penalties)
