Newport County look to cause a cupset as they welcome Watford to Rodney Parade in Third Round of 2020-21 Carabao Cup.
Whilst Newport have developed a habit of causing cupsets in FA Cup, they have failed to produce such magic in this competition but after knocking Swansea out in the opening round before defeating Cambridge last week, The Ironsides will be looking to claim their biggest scalp of the season yet in Watford.
Newport have no fresh injury concerns although Michael Flynn is expected to rotate his squad after the Ironsides claimed a 2-1 victory over Barrow on Saturday in League Two.
Watford also have no fresh injury concerns as Gerard Deulofeu, Daryl Janmaat (both knee), Ismaila Sarr (fitness), Andre Gray (hamstring) and Isaac Success (Achilles) remain absent.
Will Hughes, Etienne Capoue, Roberto Pereyra and Danny Welbeck are also unlikely to feature as they continue to rebuild their match fitness, meaning that Vladimir Ivic is likely to name an unchanged Carabao Cup team which beat Oxford United on penalties last week.
New loan signing, James Garner however could come into the starting eleven for his Hornets debut.
- This is Newport’s first-ever League Cup meeting against Watford, although the Welsh team did win their only previous clash in all cup competitions after taking a 2-0 FA Cup victory in December 1963.
- Watford have won just one of their last eight trips to Newport (W1, D2, L5).
- Newport have won just one of their last three League Cup ties against higher league opposition (W1, L2).
Having won three of four home games in all competitions this season, Newport will surely be eying up one of their biggest scalps yet as they welcome a Watford team who have bigger fish to fry elsewhere, yet somehow scraped into this round via penalties at Oxford United after a below par performance.
The Hornets therefore do have work to do without key players because Rodney Parade has rarely been an easy place for away teams to go in cup competitions in recent seasons, which highlights just how tough a fixture this will be for the Hornets and if they continue to struggle up front then I can see one winner.
Prediction: Newport County 1-0 Watford
Result: Newport County 3-1 Watford
