2019-20 Premier League: Week 34 – Brighton vs Liverpool

Brighton & Hove Albion look to take a massive step towards securing Premier League survival as they welcome Liverpool to the Amex Stadium.

Brighton can move to within a point of safety with victory against Liverpool, who already has the title sewn up but a win would put them within three wins of breaking the Premier League record points tally in a single season.

Steven Alzate is a doubt for Brighton as he continues to struggle with a groin injury which has plagued him since pre-lockdown.

Jose Izquierdo is still absent with a knee injury.

Liverpool could rest Andrew Robertson after the left-back suffered a dead calf during Sunday’s win over Aston Villa.

James Milner (thigh) could return in Robertson’s place whilst Dejan Lovren (knock) is a doubt, but Joel Matip (foot) is out for remainder of season.

Stat Attack

  • Brighton are winless in their last 10 meetings against Liverpool in all competitions (D1, L9).
  • Liverpool are unbeaten in 12 of 14 previous trips to Brighton in all competitions (W7, D5, L2).
  • Both teams have won and scored one penalty apiece in five previous Premier League meetings.
  • Brighton are yet to have a player red-carded against Liverpool in the Premier League.
  • Ten of Liverpool’s 72 league goals this season have come on counter-attacks.

Prediction

This is a tough game to call because Brighton know that victory here puts them on the brink of safety, whereas Liverpool don’t have much to play for except for records and must be tempting for Jurgen Klopp to rest key players ahead of the final few games.

I therefore am expecting a good battle if Brighton turn up with an attacking plan rather than their last home performance, otherwise this could be another successful trip for Liverpool.

Prediction: Brighton & Hove Albion 1-2 Liverpool
