2019-20 UEFA Europa League: Round of 32 First Leg – Wolves vs Espanyol

Wolves welcome Espanyol to Molineux in the first leg of their Europa League Round of 32 encounter.

This competition represents a huge chance for Wolves to potentially qualify for next season’s Champions League, given how tight the domestic battle is for a top five finish between several teams.

Ruben Vinagre is Wolves’ only absentee for this match through an on-going thigh injury, with a full squad otherwise available for selection.

Espanyol could have Raul de Tomas back from an abductor injury but Sebastien Corchia is sidelined with a knee injury.

Stat Attack

  • This is Wolves’ first ever competitive meeting with Espanyol in all competitions.
  • Wolves have met Spanish opposition just once before in European competition, losing 9-2 on aggregate to Barcelona in the Quarter-Finals of the 1959-60 European Cup.
  • Espanyol have never face English opposition before in all competitions.

Prediction

With so little stats behind this fixture, I can see a cracking game here because Espanyol seem to be prioritising this competition ahead of La Liga where they are fighting relegation.

Wolves meanwhile were fantastic against Leicester last Friday if unlucky in that they came up against an inspired Kasper Schmeichel, which shouldn’t be the case here against Espanyol who are defensively dire to say the least.

I however am expecting Espanyol to come out fighting because they have nothing to lose against a tough Wolves team, although I have to go for a comfortable home win if Wolves can find their attacking edge.

Prediction: Wolves 3-1 Espanyol

Result: Wolves 4-0 Espanyol
