2019-20 Premier League: Week 17 – Burnley vs Newcastle

Burnley once again look to end a three match losing run as they welcome Newcastle United to Turf Moor.

Burnley can move above Brighton into 12th with a win whilst Newcastle could temporarily go fifth with victory and a defeat for Sheffield United.

Ashley Barnes and Ashley Westwood are both set to return from groin injuries for Burnley, if they pass late fitness tests.

Charlie Taylor (hamstring) and Phil Bardsley (knock) will also be handed late fitness tests, whilst Jay Rodriguez is set to be available despite suffering a wrist injury in training.

Kevin Long (hip) and Johann Berg Gudmundsson (hamstring) are both still rule out for the foreseeable future.

Newcastle will be without Allan Saint-Maximin for the next month due to a hamstring injury suffered during their 2-1 win over Southampton last weekend.

Florian LeJeune (fitness) is also absent but DeAndre Yedlin could return from a groin injury if he passes a late fitness test.

Jamaal Lascelles (leg), Matt Ritchie (ankle) and Ciaran Clark (calf) are also sidelined.

Form

Burnley enter this match off the back of three consecutive defeats but have failed to score in just one of their last six home games.

Newcastle are unbeaten in their last three (W2, D1), but have scored in just two of their last five away trips.

Stat Attack

  • Burnley are unbeaten in three of last five meetings with Newcastle (W1, D2, L2).
  • Newcastle scored twice in both meetings last season to do the double over the Clarets.
  • Burnley are unbeaten in four of six previous home meetings with Newcastle during December (W3, D1, L2).
  • Chris Wood has missed 13 big chances for Burnley this season.
  • No Newcastle player is yet to produce more than one through ball this season, despite seven players doing so once.

Prediction

Burnley are just inconsistent which is a real worry coming into such a crucial part of this season, because they’re currently floating between a relegation fight and a top five challenge.

Newcastle however are finding form with two very different types of wins in their last two matches, underlining the solid job that Steve Bruce has done despite pre-season fears because they can now clearly adapt to whatever is put in front of them.

I therefore can see quite an open game of football here because Burnley will try and play their usual pressing game, whereas Newcastle can soak up the pressure and hit them on the counter which might well be crucial.

Prediction: Burnley 1-2 Newcastle United

Result: Burnley 1-0 Newcastle United
