2019-20 Sky Bet Championship: Week 16 – Sunday

Cardiff City look to continue their promotion bid as they meet rivals, Bristol City in the first Severnside Derby of this Championship season at the Cardiff City Stadium.

A home win will lift Cardiff up to tenth whilst Bristol City could return to the play-off spots in sixth place if they can take victory.

Cardiff could be without last weekend’s hat-trick hero, Joe Ralls due to an ongoing groin injury.

Sean Morrison (wrist), Robert Glatzel (hamstring), Isaac Vassell (muscular) and Danny Ward (suspension) are all ruled out.

Winger, Gavin Whyte could however feature if he can shake off a niggle.

Barnsley could be without Josh Brownhill after the midfielder picked up back spasm last weekend at Barnsley, which has prevented him from training this week.

Adam Nagy (ankle) and Jack Hunt (hamstring) are both doubts whilst Jay Dasilva is definitely absent with a leg injury.

Famara Diedhiou is serving the last of a three match ban and will be available after the international break.

Cardiff ended a four match winless run last time out after coming from behind to beat Birmingham and make it five points from their last five games, although they have kept a clean sheet in just two of their seven home league games this season.

Bristol City have taken five points from their last three matches without keeping a clean sheet, although they have scored twice in each of those three games.

Stat Attack

  • Cardiff have lost just one of their last seven meetings with Bristol City (W5, D1, L1).
  • Cardiff have scored in five of their last six home clashes with the Robins and won on each of those occasions, only failing to do so in a goalless draw in October 2015.
  • Bristol City haven’t scored twice in four consecutive league games this decade but have scored twice in three consecutive league games on two previous occasions (November 2011 & September 2012).

Form often goes out of the window in local derbies but this time, I do see form playing a part because Cardiff are unbeaten at home but Bristol City are in good goal-scoring form.

Defending however has been a poor element of both teams so I can definitely see goals flowing here, which makes me lean towards a draw but Bristol City do look the stronger on the attack and could win this.

Nevertheless, I am going with my gut instinct of a high-scoring draw.

Prediction: Cardiff City 2-2 Bristol City

Result: Cardiff City 0-1 Bristol City
